The first linocut for the year is an image of Inanna, the Sumerian Queen of Heaven. It is from the story of Inanna and the Huluppu Tree. She rescues a sapling from the flooding river and plants it in her garden. Tends to it for years with the intention of making a wedding bed out of it, but it becomes inhabited by the anzu bird, a serpent, and the dark maiden. And they won’t leave. Her brother Gilgamesh comes to her aid and forces them to leave, and he then carves her bed for her.
